Workplace violence is a pressing issue that affects many individuals and organizations around the world. From verbal abuse to physical aggression, workplace violence can leave long-lasting scars on both employees and businesses. To address this critical issue, NGO Umbrella Georgia is hosting a youth exchange program from March 24–30 in the picturesque setting of Bakuriani. This initiative brings together four young participants and one leader, all aged between 18 to 30 years, to discuss and learn about workplace violence prevention.
This post aims to highlight the objectives and activities of this youth exchange, its role in empowering youth, and the broader implications for fostering a workplace culture based on respect and safety.
Understanding Workplace Violence
Workplace violence includes various types of aggression and harassment in different employment settings, affecting not only employees but also clients and customers. In fact, studies show that nearly 25% of American workers have experienced harassment or violence at work, highlighting the urgent need for prevention strategies.
During the youth exchange, participants will engage in discussions and workshops to understand the different forms of workplace violence, such as bullying, harassment, and physical attacks. They will learn to identify early warning signs. For instance, they will explore scenarios where changes in body language or sudden shifts in tone can indicate potential conflict. The goal is to increase awareness among participants and encourage them to take initiative in promoting a violence-free workplace.
A Focus on Practical Tools and Strategies
A key element of the exchange is the focus on equipping participants with practical tools and strategies for their communities. Participants will be taught how to recognize early signs of aggression and practice effective communication techniques in tense situations.
Through role-playing exercises, participants will simulate real-life scenarios, allowing them to develop hands-on skills that can be applied in day-to-day interactions. For instance, they might practice how to de-escalate a heated situation with a colleague by using calming language and open body posture. The insights gained through these activities will empower participants to face challenges boldly and advocate for healthier workplace environments.
Promoting Advocacy and Cultural Exchange
This youth exchange also emphasizes intercultural dialogue. Participants will share their unique backgrounds and insights concerning workplace norms and safety. For example, one participant from Japan may discuss the significance of teamwork in reducing workplace conflicts, while someone from France may present approaches on implementing anti-harassment policies effectively.
After completing the program, these young leaders are expected to implement community awareness campaigns, focusing on workplace violence prevention. Their aim is to become community advocates who spread knowledge on violence prevention strategies. This collaborative experience is set to enhance mutual understanding and inspire collective action against workplace violence.
